Privacy in Social Media (updated: Sep 10, 2019)

Our social media appearances

Data processing through social networks

We maintain publicly available profiles in social networks. The individual social networks we use can be found below.

Social networks such as Facebook, Google+ etc. can generally analyse your user behaviour comprehensively if you visit their website or a website with integrated social media content (e.g. like buttons or banner ads). When you visit our social media pages, numerous data protection-relevant processing operations are triggered. In detail:

If you are logged in to your social media account and visit our social media page, the operator of the social media portal can assign this visit to your user account. Under certain circumstances, your personal data may also be recorded if you are not logged in or do not have an account with the respective social media portal. In this case, this data is collected, for example, via cookies stored on your device or by recording your IP address.

Using the data collected in this way, the operators of the social media portals can create user profiles in which their preferences and interests are stored. This way you can see interest-based advertising inside and outside of your social media presence. If you have an account with the social network, interest-based advertising can be displayed on any device you are logged in to or have logged in to.

Please also note that we cannot retrace all processing operations on the social media portals. Depending on the provider, additional processing operations may therefore be carried out by the operators of the social media portals. Details can be found in the terms of use and privacy policy of the respective social media portals.

Legal basis

Our social media appearances should ensure the widest possible presence on the Internet. This is a legitimate interest within the meaning of Art. 6 (1) lit. f GDPR. The analysis processes initiated by the social networks may be based on divergent legal bases to be specified by the operators of the social networks (e.g. consent within the meaning of Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR).

Responsibility and assertion of rights

If you visit one of our social media sites (e.g., Facebook), we, together with the operator of the social media platform, are responsible for the data processing operations triggered during this visit. You can in principle protect your rights (information, correction, deletion, limitation of processing, data portability and complaint) vis-à-vis us as well as vis-à-vis the operator of the respective social media portal (e.g. Facebook).

Please note that despite the shared responsibility with the social media portal operators, we do not have full influence on the data processing operations of the social media portals. Our options are determined by the company policy of the respective provider.

Storage time

The data collected directly from us via the social media presence will be deleted from our systems as soon as the purpose for their storage lapses, you ask us to delete it, you revoke your consent to the storage or the purpose for the data storage lapses. Stored cookies remain on your device until you delete them. Mandatory statutory provisions - in particular, retention periods - remain unaffected.

We have no control over the storage duration of your data that are stored by the social network operators for their own purposes. For details, please contact the social network operators directly (e.g. in their privacy policy, see below).

The data on this website is processed by the operator of the website, whose contact information is available under section “Information Required by Law” on this website.

How do we record your data?

We collect your data as a result of your sharing of your data with us. This may, for instance be information you enter into our contact form.

Our IT systems automatically record other data when you visit our website. This data comprises primarily technical information (e.g. web browser, operating system or time the site was accessed). This information is recorded automatically when you access our website.

What are the purposes we use your data for?

A portion of the information is generated to guarantee the error free provision of the website. Other data may be used to analyse your user patterns.

What rights do you have as far as your information is concerned?

You have the right to receive information about the source, recipients and purposes of your archived personal data at any time without having to pay a fee for such disclosures. You also have the right to demand that your data are rectified, blocked or eradicated. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time under the address disclosed in section “Information Required by Law” on this website if you have questions about this or any other data protection related issues. A wide range of data processing transactions are possible only subject to your express consent. You can also revoke at any time any consent you have already given us. To do so, all you are required to do is sent us an informal notification via e-mail. This shall be without prejudice to the lawfulness of any data collection that occurred prior to your revocation.

Right to object to the collection of data in special cases; right to object to direct advertising (Art. 21 GDPR)

In the event that data are processed on the basis of Art. 6 Sect. 1 lit. e or f GDPR, you have the right to at any time object to the processing of your personal data based on grounds arising from your unique situation. This also applies to any profiling based on these provisions. To determine the legal basis, on which any processing of data is based, please consult this Data Protection Declaration. If you log an objection, we will no longer process your affected personal data, unless we are in a position to present compelling protection worthy grounds for the processing of your data, that outweigh your interests, rights and freedoms or if the purpose of the processing is the claiming, exercising or defence of legal entitlements (objection pursuant to Art. 21 Sect. 1 GDPR).

If your personal data is being processed in order to engage in direct advertising, you have the right to at any time object to the processing of your affected personal data for the purposes of such advertising. This also applies to profiling to the extent that it is affiliated with such direct advertising. If you object, your personal data will subsequently no longer be used for direct advertising purposes (objection pursuant to Art. 21 Sect. 2 GDPR).

Right to log a complaint with the competent supervisory agency

In the event of violations of the GDPR, data subjects are entitled to log a complaint with a supervisory agency, in particular in the member state where they usually maintain their domicile, place of work or at the place where the alleged violation occurred. The right to log a complaint is in effect regardless of any other administrative or court proceedings available as legal recourses.

Right to data portability

You have the right to demand that we hand over any data we automatically process on the basis of your consent or in order to fulfil a contract be handed over to you or a third party in a commonly used, machine readable format. If you should demand the direct transfer of the data to another controller, this will be done only if it is technically feasible.

SSL and/or TLS encryption

For security reasons and to protect the transmission of confidential content, such as purchase orders or inquiries you submit to us as the website operator, this website uses either an SSL or a TLS encryption programme. You can recognise an encrypted connection by checking whether the address line of the browser switches from “http://” to “https://” and also by the appearance of the lock icon in the browser line.

If the SSL or TLS encryption is activated, data you transmit to us cannot be read by third parties.

Encrypted payment transactions on this website

If you are under an obligation to share your payment information (e.g. account number if you give us the authority to debit your bank account) with us after you have entered into a fee-based contract with us, this information is required to process payments.

Payment transactions using common modes of paying (Visa/MasterCard, debit to your bank account) are processed exclusively via encrypted SSL or TLS connections. You can recognise an encrypted connection by checking whether the address line of the browser switches from “http://” to “https://” and also by the appearance of the lock icon in the browser line.

If the communication with us is encrypted, third parties will not be able to read the payment information you share with us.

Information about, blockage, rectification and eradication of data

Within the scope of the applicable statutory provisions, you have the right to at any time demand information about your archived personal data, their source and recipients as well as the purpose of the processing of your data. You may also have a right to have your data rectified, blocked or eradicated. If you have questions about this subject matter or any other questions about personal data, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time at the address provided in section “Information Required by Law.”

Right to demand processing restrictions

You have the right to demand the imposition of restrictions as far as the processing of your personal data is concerned. To do so, you may contact us at any time at the address provided in section “Information Required by Law.” The right to demand restriction of processing applies in the following cases:

  • In the event that you should dispute the correctness of your data archived by us, we will usually need some time to verify this claim. During the time that this investigation is ongoing, you have the right to demand that we restrict the processing of your personal data.
  • If the processing of your personal data was/is conducted in an unlawful manner, you have the option to demand the restriction of the processing of your data in lieu of demanding the eradication of this data.
  • If we do not need your personal data any longer and you need it to exercise, defend or claim legal entitlements, you have the right to demand the restriction of the processing of your personal data instead of its eradication.
  • If you have raised an objection pursuant to Art. 21 Sect. 1 GDPR, your rights and our rights will have to be weighed against each other. As long as it has not been determined whose interests prevail, you have the right to demand a restriction of the processing of your personal data.

If you have restricted the processing of your personal data, these data – with the exception of their archiving – may be processed only subject to your consent or to claim, exercise or defend legal entitlements or to protect the rights of other natural persons or legal entities or for important public interest reasons cited by the European Union or a member state of the EU.

You have the right to revoke at any time any consent you have already given us. To do so, all you are required to do is sent us an informal notification via e-mail. This shall be without prejudice to the lawfulness of any data collection that occurred prior to your revocation.

We shall use such data only for the sending of the requested information and shall not share such data with any third parties.

The processing of the information entered into the newsletter subscription form shall occur exclusively on the basis of your consent (Art. 6 Sect. 1 lit. a GDPR). You may revoke the consent you have given to the archiving of data, the e-mail address and the use of this information for the sending of the newsletter at any time, for instance by clicking on the "Unsubscribe" link in the newsletter. This shall be without prejudice to the lawfulness of any data processing transactions that have taken place to date.

MailChimp

This website uses the services of MailChimp to send out its newsletters. The provider is the Rocket Science Group LLC, 675 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Suite 5000, Atlanta, GA 30308, USA.

Among other things, MailChimp is a service that can be deployed to organise and analyse the sending of newsletters. Whenever you enter data for the purpose of subscribing to a newsletter (e.g. your e-mail address), the information is stored on MailChimp servers in the United States.

MailChimp is in possession of a certification that is in compliance with the “EU-US-Privacy-Shield.” The “Privacy-Shield” is a compact between the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA) that aims to warrant the compliance with European data protection standards in the United States.

With the assistance of the MailChimp tool, we can analyse the performance of our newsletter campaigns. If you open an e-mail that has been sent through the MailChimp tool, a file that has been integrated into the e-mail (a so-called web-beacon) connects to MailChimp’s servers in the United States. As a result, it can be determined whether a newsletter message has been opened and which links the recipient possibly clicked on. Technical information is also recorded at that time (e.g. the time of access, the IP address, type of browser and operating system). This information cannot be allocated to the respective newsletter recipient. Their sole purpose is the performance of statistical analyses of newsletter campaigns. The results of such analyses can be used to tailor future newsletters to the interests of their recipients more effectively.

If you do not want to permit an analysis by MailChimp, you must unsubscribe from the newsletter. We provide a link for you to do this in every newsletter message. Moreover, you can also unsubscribe from the newsletter right on the website.

The data is processed based on your consent (Art. 6 Sect. 1 lit. a GDPR).  You may revoke any consent you have given at any time by unsubscribing from the newsletter. This shall be without prejudice to the lawfulness of any data processing transactions that have taken place prior to your revocation.

The data you archive with us for the purpose of the newsletter subscription shall be archived by us until you unsubscribe from the newsletter. Once you cancel your subscription to the newsletter, the data shall be deleted from our servers as well as those of MailChimp. This shall not affect data we have been archiving for other purposes.

For more details, please consult the Data Privacy Policies of MailChimp at: https://mailchimp.com/legal/terms/.

Execution of a contract data processing agreement

We have executed a so-called “Data Processing Agreement” with MailChimp, in which we mandate that MailChimp undertakes to protect the data of our customers and to refrain from sharing it with third parties. You may review this Agreement under the following link: https://mailchimp.com/legal/forms/data-processing-agreement/sample-agreement/.

Melani Zeller, Analyste marketing, OMRON Europe B.V.

Marco Paone, DaimlerChrysler AG, Recherche & anlayse concurrentielle

« A dépassé toutes mes attentes ….
Jim Hawley, Eastman Chemical, ICI-1

« Tellement plus pertinent que les autres séminaires en information concurrentielle auxquels j’avais assisté… L’atelier correspondait effectivement à mes propres besoins, et le fait d’être en contact avec des enseignants qui ont une expérience du monde réel fait de ce séminaire une véritable expérience ! ».
Meghan McLaughlin, The Collaborative Group

Dr. Klaus Marquardt, Wacker Specialties, ICI-1

« Pour moi, le cours en intelligence économique à Bad Nauheim, signifie : intéressant, des sujets bien en rapport avec mon travail, traités avec expertise et compétence. D’où, une expérience tout à fait recommandable! ».
Dr. Carsten Deus, Deus Consulting, ICI-5

Gerhard Fraune, CTcon GmbH, ICI-1

The Body of Knowledge (BOK) for Competitive Intelligence

A Body of Knowledge (BOK) is defined [1] as “the complete set of concepts, terms and activities that make up a professional domain, as defined by the relevant professional association”. While the term body of knowledge is also used to describe the document that defines that knowledge — the body of knowledge itself is more than simply a collection of terms; a professional reading list; a library; a website or a collection of websites; a description of professional functions; or even a collection of information. It is the accepted ontology for a specific domain.

History

In December 2005 SCIP launched a BOK initiative. Under the leadership of Dr. John Prescott (Chair), University of Pittsburgh, the BOK Task Force was established comprising a core team of 10 members, supplemented by an international team of over 30 Competitive Intelligence professionals.

As a result of this initiative a draft Competitive Intelligence BOK was published in May 2008  [3]. This draft was circulated throughout the wider competitive intelligence community to elicit feedback and to refine the BOK. After this validation phase the final BOK [1] was published on September 19th 2008.

CI Books Goals and Applications

The purpose of the CI BOK is to create a “Compendium of current and leading-edge competencies drawn on by CI professionals and their organizations” [2][3].  Competencies in this BOK are defined as

  •  "clusters of skills, abilities, and behaviours required for successful performance in the job”.
  • “Competencies that set Competitive Intelligence apart from related professional disciplines” [3]

Prescott mentioned 4 principal applications for the BOK in CI products and programs [3]:

  1. Competitive Intelligence Careers
The BOK should serve as the foundation for designing job descriptions, interviewing guides, career paths, etc.
  2. Certification & Training
The BOK should serve as the foundation for designing a certification program and CI training programs
  3. Academic Curriculum
The BOK should assist Colleges and Universities in developing coursework for CI programs
  4. SCIP Publications
The BOK should provide a framework for developing articles for CIM , JCIM , SCIP.Online etc.

Competency Domains

The Competitive Intelligence Body of Knowledge defines 7 knowledge areas, which group together related sets of tasks and techniques. Each of these tasks and techniques describes the typical knowledge, skills, processes and deliverables that the competitive intelligence professional requires to be able to perform those tasks competently.

Professional certification through the Institute for Competitive Intelligence

With the Body of Knowledge established, the Institute for Competitive Intelligence was able to validate its existing certification program. ICI’s modular certificate program became operational in 2004 as a means of training competitive intelligence professionals in the art of CI. ICI’s CPCI™ program is currently the only CI training program of its kind which comprehensively addresses all the areas of SCIP’s Body of Knowledge.
General CI education concepts as well as ICI’s specific training approach were published in 2010 [5].

Competitive Intelligence Research Center (CIRC)

The Institute for Competitive Intelligence Research Center (CIRC) ensures the high quality standard of our certificates and our workshops by continuously monitoring and - if necessary - updating ICI’s teaching contents. Through regular in-depth discussions of our faculty with our network partners and leading experts within the Competitive Intelligence community, we have been able to further develop ICI’s curriculum and teaching methodology. Candidates on the ICI CPCI certificate program also contribute towards the development through the submission of case studies.

Additional offerings of the ICI Research Center:

  • Cost-effective studies for medium and large sized companies in cooperation with our academic network partners (e.g. in the context of theses or dissertations)
  • Contract research on Competitive Intelligence topics in scientific contexts
  • Online database research and networking between academia and practitioners (e.g. for conferences, events and press releases)
  • Student access to our CI library

We are of course happy to discuss any other issues and suggestions you might have.

The CIRC’s mission is to bridge the gap between the scientific world and practical application. Our aim is to connect these two worlds and generate fruitful dialog. Our networks form a Competitive Intelligence community that is open to suggestions from practitioners. They also support the introduction of the latest scientific insights into day-to-day business.

If you are interested in joining our network or if you have suggestions regarding our activities we would like to hear from you. Please send an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

What is Competitive Intelligence?

Why do you need Competitive Intelligence (CI)?

CI Konzepte Companies and markets are now more than ever subject to a rapid change of products and competitors. This is especially the case with markets that go through constant change (short product life cycles, globalization). The ability of a company to generate competitive advantages through one's own "Competitive Intelligence" abilites has now become prerequisite for survival, since a management decision can only be as good as the information it is based upon.

What is Competitive Intelligence?

The term "Intelligence" has its origins in military vocabulary: without the "reconnaissance" of the enemy, no commander can maneuver his troops into the right starting position or gain advantages for his own troops with a surprise attack. In military diction, intelligence can most accurately be related to (early- or enemy-) "reconnaissance".

In analogy to these considerations, a company also requires information on current and future markets, competitors, customers, technologies, etc., so that it can position itself optimally, make the "right" decisions and ultimately realize them at the most ideal point in time. The "Competitive Intelligence"-Manager has the responsibility to collect relevant information, analyze it and make it accessible to decision-makers in a suitable form. Not an easy task in times of the frequently cited "information overload" and in a dynamic, global competitive arena.

"Competitive Intelligence" (CI) can be described as a systematic process of information retrieval and -analysis, in which fragmented (raw) information on markets, competitors and technologies can be transformed into a vivid understanding of the corporate environment for the decision-maker. Competitive Intelligence topics are usually future-oriented statements on competitive positioning, -intentions and -strategies. On the other hand, "Intelligence" is the final result of the process: the required knowledge on markets and competition. Especially statements on the expected effects on one's own firm and thereupon based recommendations are made.

Obviously, Competitive Intelligence is especially of immediate importance for tasks concerning strategy or corporate development. In numerous other corporate divisions, knowledge of Competitive Intelligence can also be used to support tactical decisions.

Main applications

  • Competitor profiling (facts, intentions, reaction profiles, threats and opportunities)

Testimonials

"I very much enjoyed my participation in this workshop - very well organized and valuable networking. Essence, value and process of Competitive Intelligence are a lot clearer to me now. The Dolce is a great place."
Melani Zeller, Marketing Analyst, OMRON Europe B.V.

"ICI-1 is a well organized introduction to Competitive Intelligence, covering the topic from A to Z and providing a clear overview of the limits and potential of Competitive Intelligence."
Ryuichi Hiratsuka, Siltronic AG

"As opposed to other programs that remain on an abstract level, the workshop "Scenario techniques" (ICI-22) conveys a very good understanding on how to conduct scenario techniques in a corporate environment. With the case study, time- and personnel expenditure issues are tackled as well as subtle pitfalls pointed out in vivid detail. Also very helpful is the use of scenario software. At the end of the day, one doesn't have the impression of just having listened to interesting theories and abstract examples, but of actually having learned to apply the methodology and at the same time being able to realistically judge the effort and potential pitfalls.
Claudia Sternberg, Voith

"This is the kind of workshop one would always wish to attend: well versed attendees from all industry sectors and a really competent faculty leader who offers the beginner an excellent overview, but also provides specialists with new insights."
Dr. Klaus Marquardt, Wacker Specialties

"The ICI course in Bad Nauheim - that means for me: Interesting and very relevant topics for my work, expertly and competently demonstrated. Thus, absolutely recommendable! "
Dr. Carsten Deus, Deus Consulting

With the ICI workshop "Analysis Methods", one can learn Porter's theories in a practical and demonstrative way - thus the know-how can be implemented directly in one's own business!"
Dr. Andre Stürzenbecher, Bayer Schering Pharma AG

"The workshop informs in a practical way on the dangers that a company can be exposed to through unknowing or negligent divulging of information. Besides the sensitization for the importance of the subject-matter, ways and means are shown to recognize these dangers as prospects and to use Competitive Intelligence as an aid for one's own positioning in the market. Specific procedures quickly help to establish the first steps in the development of a structured Competitive Intelligence."
Gerhard Fraune, CTcon GmbH

"Far from grey theory, this workshop is practically orientated, working with a case study. The independent developing and presenting of proposed solutions makes this workshop an intensive and entertaining experience. Interesting discussions and dialogs with the attendees excellently broadens one's CI-horizon. The workshop was a complete success and absolutely recommendable due to the professional competence of Mr. Michaeli."
Andrea Rehm-Dober, SV- Versicherungen

“ICI-1 Competitive Intelligence Basics strengthened my CI knowledge and made it clearer where my future efforts in CI should be directed. ICI-1 is a workshop that offers extremely interesting topics presented in a clear and enjoyable way."
Marco Paone, Daimler AG, Competition Research and Analysis

" Exceeded all my expectations ... Real world experiences made all the difference ... I highly recommend this class ..."
Jim Hawley, Eastman Chemical

"So much more relevant than other CI classes I have attended… The workshop effectively addressed my specific CI needs and the availability of experienced real world instructors made this workshop a really great experience!"
Meghan McLaughlin, The Collaborative Group

"The open forum ... small class size made all the difference ... The instructors knew first hand what they were teaching "
Glen Roberts, Siemens

“The workshops we attended were very good. The best part were the assignments you chose from real examples or use cases, this helped in understanding the concepts better. Also we could relate them to our day-to-day activities.”
Ruturaj Kalagate, Atos

“The ICI conference offered a good selection of different CI-related topics and a balanced mix of presentations and networking opportunities. The conference organization was excellent.”
Sylvia Geisler, Evonik Degussa GmbH

“For me the exchange of practical experience is as significant as the insight into innovative methodologies. That’s why participation at this conference is so important for me.”
Reiner Wergen, Atos Worldline

“CI Conference: build and maintain contacts; learn about new topics and benchmark your processes against your peers. In short: The art of competitive intelligence!”
Joachim A. Pach, Myllykoski Sales GmbH

"The Competitive Intelligence Basics workshop I attended has provided me with key elements to consider in my professional life. The ethical aspect of the competitive intelligence has been addressed through open discussions with the trainer but also among the participants which provided a good understanding of what could be done in an appropriate manner. The other element I have retained from this workshop is the importance of the question which is asked and what could be the evidences to support the answer. Last but not least, it is important to look for contradictory data that would confront the answer found as we have too often a natural tendency to either be satisfied with an answer we had more or less preconceived or with the first probable answer.
Lastly, the workshop was led by a practitioner, Rainer Michaeli, who brings a lot of practical examples which help to better understand what Competitive Intelligence is all about."
Norbert Clery, Senior Consultant European Distribution, Eli Lilly and Company
